Senior Service Designer – Roles and Responsibilities

  • Communicate complex design concepts clearly to both design and non‑design stakeholders, documenting decisions, risks and open issues in a transparent way.
  • Build shared understanding and alignment by challenging assumptions constructively and facilitating agreement on design direction.

Inclusive and Ethical Design

  • Advise on and ensure delivery of inclusive, accessible and sustainable services, meeting accessibility standards and considering diverse user contexts.
  • Design ethical services that respect users’ personal, social and environmental circumstances.

Strategic Service Design

  • Promote user‑centred design as an enabler of organisational goals, helping teams align work to the wider service vision.
  • Shape service design strategically by understanding risks, opportunities and constraints across policy, technology and organisational systems.
  • Develop and contribute to reusable design patterns and components to support consistent, scalable service delivery.

Collaborative Design

  • Plan and facilitate effective design workshops, adapting sessions to achieve meaningful outcomes and involving the right people at the right time.
  • Work across professional boundaries (e.g., policy, product, technical teams) to ensure a joined‑up design process.

EvidenceDriven Design

  • Analyse and synthesise complex user evidence, including large datasets and multi‑source research.
  • Formulate and use design hypotheses effectively, applying research insights to develop, test and refine design ideas.

Iterative and Agile Design

  • Apply and support others in using iterative and agile methods, embedding continuous improvement across the design lifecycle.
  • Prototype and iterate complex concepts, refining designs based on successive rounds of learning and changing user or business needs.

Milestone MS03 will be led specifically by the Senior Service Designer: MS03 Service Design Foundations

  • Deliver high-level “as-is” and “to-be” user journeys/service blueprints.
  • Produce initial wireframes, user personas, information architecture, and question logic flows.
  • Ensure alignment of data collection with the NDRS Rare Disease Data Set.
