Mastek is a global digital engineering and cloud transformation specialist, trusted by public sector organisations to deliver large‑scale, mission‑critical digital services. With a strong and established presence across the UK public sector, including healthcare, Mastek partners with organisations such as NHS England to modernise data platforms, enable advanced analytics, and deliver secure, cloud‑native solutions at national scale.

Mastek is recognised for its ability to operate effectively within highly regulated environments, combining deep engineering and data capability with strong delivery governance. The organisation works in close partnership with NHS teams and strategic technology providers to deliver outcomes‑focused, data‑driven programmes that improve population health and operational performance.

Programme Context – NHS Data Platforms & Data Services

This role supports NHS England and wider public sector data programmes delivering enterprise data platforms and analytics capabilities, including programmes leveraging Palantir Foundry as a core data integration, modelling, and analytics environment.

The initial placement for this role will be within NHS England, supporting nationally significant data initiatives focused on clinical, operational, and population‑level insight, delivered within a highly regulated environment aligned to NHS governance, security, and assurance standards.

Role Overview

The Senior Data Engineer – Palantir Foundry Data Platform is a senior delivery role operating at SFIA Level 5 (Ensure, Advise). You will provide hands‑on technical leadership to design, build, and optimise scalable data pipelines, semantic models, and data products using Palantir Foundry in a production environment.

You will work closely with data scientists, analysts, product teams, and business stakeholders to deliver robust, production‑grade data foundations that support analytics, automation, and operational decision‑making, while ensuring reliability, performance, and long‑term sustainability.

This is a senior role with responsibility for influencing engineering approach across multiple teams and workstreams, and for providing visible technical leadership within blended NHS England and supplier environments.

Key Responsibilities (SFIA Level 5 – Ensure, Advise)

  • Act as a senior technical contributor across one or more data platform workstreams, providing clear engineering leadership and decision support.

  • Design, develop, and maintain end‑to‑end data pipelines using Palantir Foundry (e.g., Pipeline Builder, Code Repositories, Data Lineage, Ontology, Workshop, Quiver).

  • Implement batch, incremental, and streaming ETL/ELT workflows with reusable, production‑ready components.

  • Build and maintain high‑quality, version‑controlled data products aligned to business use cases, ensuring clarity of purpose and reusability.

  • Engineer solutions within federated data environments, integrating diverse sources and handling complex integration requirements.

  • Design, extend, and maintain Foundry ontologies, including object types, link types, property types, and semantic relationships.

  • Build and maintain semantic layers to support analytics, operational workflows, and machine learning use cases.

  • Embed strong data quality principles through validation checks, lineage tracking, and governance frameworks.

  • Monitor pipeline performance and optimise for scalability, cost efficiency, and speed.

  • Implement automated testing, CI/CD patterns, and deployment best practices for Foundry‑based data assets using Git‑based workflows and software engineering practices.

  • Troubleshoot production issues, perform root‑cause analysis, and drive long‑term fixes to improve reliability and maintainability.

  • Translate ambiguous business requirements into scalable data engineering solutions and communicate data design and pipeline behaviour clearly to technical and non‑technical stakeholders.

  • Support Foundry Workshop apps, dashboards, and end‑user analytical experiences where needed to ensure delivered data products are usable and valuable.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Significant experience operating as a Data Engineer in production environments, with strong depth in building and operating data pipelines and data products.

  • Proven, hands‑on experience working with Palantir Foundry in a production environment.

  • Strong proficiency in Python, SQL, PySpark, and Spark SQL.

  • Strong understanding of data modelling, schema design, metadata management, and governance.

  • Experience implementing CI/CD, automated testing, and Git‑based workflows aligned to software engineering best practices.

  • Experience delivering production pipelines in cloud environments (AWS, Azure, or GCP).

  • Ability to operate at SFIA Level 5, providing technical guidance, assuring quality and standards, and advising stakeholders on options and trade‑offs (rather than delivery only).

  • Strong communication skills, able to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders to ensure shared understanding.

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • Experience building and governing semantic models (e.g., ontology‑driven approaches) to support operational and analytical use cases.

  • Experience working in highly regulated environments, including public sector and/or healthcare contexts.

  • Experience supporting analytics and end‑user experiences through platform features such as Workshop apps and dashboards.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field (or equivalent experience).

  • 5+ years of experience in data engineering (or 3+ years with strong Foundry depth).
